The stories in both games felt tacked on and beside, not integrated into the game. The problem is, you can just look at the rewards and skip the flavor text if you want. Stellaris was like a board game in its story cards, ES2 was more like a branching adventure book where you make several decisions along the way. ES2 probably felt more involved in this regard with longer stories that play out over several events. The stories and events felt the same to me, but I found them boring and skipped a lot of the text. A difficulty 9 it is like walking a knifes edge and beating two difficulty 10s with expert constraints enabled can be reported as a bug. ![]() Overall you are in a constant balance of managing how much you will trigger ai response and their strength vs growing your fleet strength in order to take out the ai homeworld and win. Each offering their own risk/reward to using them. You upgrade your fleet(s) by taking locations and reduce the ai’s response by a few activities - some you raid to blow up a specific building, some you settle the planet and hold it, and another you hold off waves of enemies that double each wave. On low difficulties you can fight your way through in 4x land grab fashion, but on normal/hard difficulty (7-9) you need to take only the minimum locations you need to win. Instead of roughly equal empires doing a land grab on the galaxy the war is already over and the Ai’s won. If someone could capture the best out of Stellaris, Endless Space 2, and the combat from Sins of the Solar Empire I'd be stoked!Ĭheck out ai wars 2 for more strategically deep grand strategy Space game. That being said if I could only choose one trapped on a deserted island I'd probably still pick Stellaris. Don't just disregard it as a lesser Stellaris, it's just different doing it's own thing. I recommend giving ES2 another chance sometime in the distant future if you feel yourself craving an x4 game. It's probably the feature I miss most when playing ES2. Mid and Endgame events in Stellaris can make for some really interesting games. Stellaris has more colonization options and interesting planet management systems. ![]() Because of that I tend to get a bit more immersed in the universe. Stellaris does a good job of just having more variety in it's events and what goes on in your universe. Soundtracks are very good in both games, though on average I think I enjoy the ES2 tracks just a bit more. there is a lot more variety and unlocking new techs feels a bit more substantial. Neither have great combat though, if I'm being honest. Endless Space also gets a slight nod here, as I actually enjoy watching some of the bigger fleet battles in ES2. The combat in Stellaris is pretty boring and over in a few seconds. Endless Space 2 also in my opinion, has the better ship designs (some are just gorgeous) and graphics. They all have some kind of unique playstyle or science to unlock and that adds to some of the replayability.
